Promotion season in India is here, and a lot of people you know are walking around hurt this week. Some of them have not told you, and they will not, because the hurt of being passed over is one of the lonelier hurts available to a working person. Inside, the feeling is failure. Nobody around you has used the word, and the feeling does not need anyone to use it. You scroll LinkedIn and see somebody else's announcement, and the rest of the day takes more out of you than it should.
There is a verse in the Bhagavad Gita that gets quoted to death about exactly this moment, and it is so famous I worry quoting it again will lose half of you before I have made my point. कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन. You have a right to your action. You have no right to its fruit. The verse is almost always misread as a command to detach, to stop caring, to become a stoic robot who works hard and pretends not to want anything. That is not what Krishna is saying.
Krishna is saying the verdict on your work was never yours to control. Promotion decisions involve your performance, budgets, internal politics, optics, the boss's mood that morning, and the agendas of three people in a room you have never been in. Your effort is yours. The fruit was always going to belong to a system that has its own logic, and that logic is rarely a fair measure of you.
What Krishna is offering is the freedom from handing your inner stability over to a result that was never fully yours. You can keep caring, you can keep wanting, and the only thing he is asking you to loosen is the grip.
Two practical moves come out of this if the hurt is fresh.
First, separate your dharma from your validation. Your dharma at work is competence, integrity, reliability, and growth. Promotion is a result. Dharma is what you do regardless of the result. Keep your dharma clean, and you stay powerful inside any system, fair or unfair.
Second, ask one calm question and treat the answer as data. Ask the person who decided what would make them confident to promote you in the next cycle, and how the two of you will know you have done it. If the answer is specific, you have a path forward. If the answer is vague or evasive, that vagueness is itself the answer, and you should plan accordingly.
The Bhagavad Gita is a battlefield manual for people who have to keep going when things have not gone their way, and promotion week is one of those weeks.
